Despierta began in 2020 as a small but powerful idea—to help Latina women and girls in Charlotte feel seen, supported, and empowered. What started with just a few volunteers and a vision has grown into a thriving ecosystem of programs, partnerships, and opportunities that uplift and transform lives.

We saw a need: too many Latinas were navigating mental health struggles, isolation, systemic barriers, or school challenges without support or culturally relevant resources. So we created a space where they could rise—together.

Today, Despierta is more than a nonprofit. It’s a movement, a community, and a beacon of hope for hundreds of women, girls, and families across Mecklenburg County.

Our mission at Despierta is to transform the lives of Latina youth and women through mental health and educational programs, empowering them to develop their talents and become leaders within their communities.

We meet capital latinas where they are with dignity, empathy, and cultural understanding.

We create safe spaces for healing, learning, and growth

We help students succed in school, mothers thrive at home, and young women build brighter futures.

We’re not just teaching skills we’re nurturing confidence, identity, and leadership

We envision a community where every Latina has access to tools, mentors, and opportunities that allow her to rise above limitations and embrace her full potential—mentally, emotionally, and professionally.
